Two New Releases!

Mitch Hiller - Scrapbook

We are very proud to be releasing a new album by one of the UK's leading songwriters. Previously best known for writing hits for other people, this is his first solo recording, featuring various great musicians as guests. In 2006, Flat Five Records released three new albums:
All for a Beautiful Life by Stekpanna, Notes From Underground by Stekpanna, Leonid Vintskevich and Nikolai Vintskevich and In Between by Argentinean virtuso guitarist Luis D'Agostino.

All for a Beatiful Life cover art by Heather McDonough All For a Beautiful LIfe features the suberb sax of Ed Jones and trumpet of Steve Waterman, and has received some wonderful reviews already in The Guardian and Jazzwise Magazine. It's available direct from us, or from all good record stores (online and in real life).

Notes from Underground was recorded in the UK the last time the Vintskeviches were on these shores. It's a superb collection of mostly orginal tunes. Go to our Listen section for a free MP3 sample.

In Between is the debut recording of Luis D'Agostino's regular trio, featuring Charlie Stratford on Drums and Raph Mizraki on bass. It's a collection of gorgeous standards, with some reworkings of classic South American pieces. Luis's guitar playing is exquisite on all of them.

Flat Five Live at the Edinburgh Festival, 2005

This year we're taking a wide range of music and cabaret groups and artists to the Fringe. Some performances are at the Spiegel Garden (so called because this year it contains TWO Spiegeltents, rather than just our old favourite, the Famous Spiegeltent). We're also putting on some shows at a reincarnation of a venue that for years was the heart of great music on the Fringe, the Acoustic Music Centre. This is reopening in a new premises in the Haymarket pcart of town.

Our line up features Fringe favourites, the Big Buzzard Boogie Band, and amazing singer from New Orleans bringing Mae West back to life, and Edinburgh Fringe debuts from The Rosinators, Jonathan Cairney, Amy Kohn and Dynamo's Rhythm Aces - all of whom deserve to create a huge splash this year.

Thanks for stopping by, it's great to see you here! Flat Five Records is part of the growing number of 'cottage industries' of the 21st Century, doing something that we love on a small, but important scale. We like to think of ourselves as part of the same breed as organic farmers making specialist cheese, or a small pottery in the Somerset hills, or a tiny brewery (like this one) on the Shetland Islands, filling and labelling each bottle by hand. Most importantly, the stuff in the bottles is of the finest quality, and with a sense that this is not something you'd ever get from a multinational conglomerate. So it is with the music we release. We have an unashamedely eclectic catalogue, with music at the 'traditional' end of the jazz spectrum alongside some wonderfully adventurous recordings. There are loads of free samples right here.

If this was a real 'cottage', we'd invite you in and have time for a chat about the state of the world over a cup of tea, or more likely (given suitable sun-yardarm alignment) a dram of something stronger. As we're separated by time and space, please do send us a to let us know you were here, and whether you like what you found.
